Furniture with a story: why a second life is often more valuable than a fresh start

A desk that’s in an office today might be part of a project space in a few months. A conference table might move from a corporate headquarters to a temporary workspace. And an office chair supports dozens of different users over the course of its lifetime.

At Alvero, we see this happen every day.

For us, every piece of furniture tells a story. Not because it’s new, but precisely because it has already been in various places, served different organizations, and been used by many people. That’s exactly what circular working means to us: allowing products to add value for as long as possible.

In this blog, we’ll show you why furniture with a story is often more sustainable than you might think.

“For the NATO summit in June 2025, we were asked to provide the furniture for several high-level meeting venues in The Hague. To that end, we expanded our product range with two new conference chairs selected specifically for this setting. These chairs perfectly meet the requirements for comfort, style, and functionality. They have since been added to our permanent collection and are available for rent. It’s great to see that products that have proven themselves at the highest level are now finding their way into other office environments.”

Comfort in Two Styles – New to the Collection

During the NATO summit, we introduced two new conference chairs that are now part of our product line. Both chairs feature a low backrest, are upholstered in high-quality beige fabric, and offer a comfortable seating experience. One version features an elegant star base with a 180-degree swivel function and a return mechanism—perfect for modern conference rooms where ease of use is key. The other version has a stable four-leg base and a timeless design that fits into any office environment. Both are now available for rent, fully cleaned and ready for use.

In addition to the chairs, we also featured two of our trusted sofas during the summit. These have been part of our collection for some time, but definitely deserve a spot in this special edition. The Luna sofa and the Eastwood double seater provided the right atmosphere and comfort in various spaces—just as they do in other projects.

As always, the furniture is returned to our warehouse after use, where it is thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and prepared for its next assignment. So everything is fresh and in top condition for the next project.

Behind every piece of furniture lies a new story

A piece of furniture doesn’t have to be new to remain valuable. In fact, it’s precisely by giving furniture multiple lives that you make the most of its quality and prevent unnecessary waste.

For us, that is the essence of circular approach. Not starting over again and again, but building on what already exists.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is circular furniture?

Circular furniture is furniture that remains in use for as long as possible through maintenance, reuse, repair, and ultimately recycling.

  • Why is reuse important?

Reusing furniture reduces the need for new raw materials and extends the lifespan of existing products.

  • How does Alvero ensure that furniture lasts longer?

After each project, we inspect, clean, and maintain the furniture as needed so it can be reused for the next client.

  • Is used furniture of lower quality?

Not necessarily. Well-maintained, high-quality furniture can last for years and continues to function excellently even after multiple projects.

  • Why does renting fit within a circular economy?

Because products are used by multiple organizations and are therefore utilized to their fullest potential throughout their lifespan.
