An opportunity to accelerate the sustainable transition

Sustainability is increasing in importance on all fronts. Also within the facility management world. As a company, you are expected to act sustainably and deal responsibly with the materials and raw materials in your work environment. With the advent of CSRD, initiated by the European Commission, a large proportion of companies in the Netherlands are required to report their sustainability figures.

Why did the European Commission create CSRD?

The European Commission created the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) to improve and standardize sustainability reporting within the European Union. CSRD is not just a reporting tool; it is a catalyst for change. By being transparent about your non-financial performance, companies will experience pressure to make improvements in sustainability, and in the broadest sense of the word. A key component is the office furniture you own as an organization. Without many companies expecting it, office furniture has a huge impact on our environment.

Why did the European Commission create CSRD?

Is CSRD important for my organization?

Are you a publicly traded company? Then it's your turn in 2024. There are 3 criteria for large companies. Do you meet 2 of the 3 criteria below? Then you must report in 2025.

  • More than 250 employees
  • More than €50 million in sales
  • More than €25 million in assets

Although CSRD is primarily aimed at larger companies, it also affects small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). They may be indirectly affected by the reporting requirements of larger companies within their value chain. Consider price increases or changes in products, services or practices. And, potentially, SMEs will also have yet to begin reporting their sustainability practices.

What can you report on?

The two themes relevant within the office environment are climate change and circularity. These are hugely interrelated, as circular office design reduces resources, as well as greenhouse gases. The big question remains: How to start with circularity, and do you want to know how to calculate greenhouse gases for furniture?

Alvero is working on a whitepaper that answers the above question. This whitepaper will be published at the end of Q2. Curious about the whitepaper? As soon as it is finalized we will communicate it on LinkedIn.

How important is CSRD to my organization?

Where do I start?

In order to make an impact on circularity and climate change, first of all, it is important to be able to measure your furniture. You do that with a furniture management system like Alvero Furniture Management. This system facilitates a circular approach to office furniture, supports companies in their CSRD reporting, and helps them reduce their carbon footprint. We map and register all the furniture you own. Then actions follow: Maintenance, repairs, moves or collections (in the case of rental furniture).

Knowing what you have is the starting point. We are also creating a database to calculate the carbon footprint of your furniture. Rarely do suppliers have an idea of how much CO₂ emissions there are during the manufacturing process of a piece of furniture. Let alone know what the difference in CO₂ emissions is when you buy or rent. Again, follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on this development.
